Editorial Style
Exceptions
- “University” is always capitalized when referencing Kettering. Example: “The University is committed to community vitality.”
- All faculty and administration with academic Ph.Ds are referred to as “Dr.” upon first reference in communications materials.
- All states are spelled out rather than using AP Style abbreviations.
- Names of all colleges and academic departments are always capitalized. Examples: College of Engineering; Department of Computer Science.
- Alumni and students are referred to by first name, last name and abbreviated class year upon first reference. Example: Mary Barra ’85.
- Official name of Kettering University’s president in written materials: Kettering University President Dr. Robert K. McMahan.
- Titles of administration in written materials examples: Dr. James Zhang, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs; Jennifer Patterson, Vice President for University Advancement and External Relations; Dr. Scott Grasman, Dean, College of Engineering.
- The following are how to reference Kettering University cooperative and experiential education elements:
- Use cooperative education when referring to the model itself.
- Use Co-op when referring to a specific job.
- The actual department on campus is called Cooperative and Experiential Education.
- The University Avenue Corridor Coalition (UACC) is an independent organization founded by Kettering University that consists of community organizations, businesses and individual members. On first reference, the University Avenue Corridor Coalition should be spelled out in its entirety. On subsequent references within the same text, it should be referred to as UACC.
- Kettering University Online offers online master’s degrees and certificates in a format that allows professionals to take their careers to the next level. On first reference, it is referred to as Kettering University Online (KUO). On subsequent references, it can be abbreviated as KUO.”
