History of Team
Starting off as a small competition between four teams in the Summer of 1981, Formula SAE
had the goal of providing automotive enthusiasts the opportunity to use their creativity and
knowledge of cars to develop a small-scale formula car. The competition continued to grow as
the years progressed and eventually, in 1987, Kettering University, known as GMI Engineering &
Management Institution at this time, attended their first Formula SAE competition, earning 20th
place. Our Formula SAE team has an extensive history from the times of “GMI Racing”, until
now, proving determination and engineering excellence.
What we do
In Formula SAE, we are given the task of designing and building a small-scale open wheel race
car. In competition, our vehicle is scored based on our knowledge of design decisions and
accuracy of cost documentation in addition to on track dynamic events. Formula SAE is a
multidisciplinary competition combining mechanical and electrical systems, as well as
developing project management and marketing skills. Students of all majors and class levels are
welcome and encouraged to join the team!
FSAE Electric
The second FSAE team is a new and exciting initiative, which involves creating the university's
very first battery-electric race car. This project allows students to explore cutting-edge electric
vehicle technology and is a significant step forward in Kettering’s motorsports program.
