“We’re very excited to be able to offer this powerful virtual tool to the Kettering Community.”
A new tool offered by the Kettering University Office of Instructional, Administrative and Information Technology makes access to a variety of software and online resources possible from anywhere.
The Virtual Computing Lab, or ‘KUcloud,’ allows students, faculty and staff the ability to access a wide range of software as well as network drives, which were previously only accessible on campus, via the internet. The ‘KUcloud’ supports multiple platforms; such as, Mac, Windows, and Tablets.
“It’s increasingly important for everyone to have the flexibility to access files and software virtually,” said Viola Sprague, vice president for Instructional, Administrative and Information Technology. “KUcloud provides a convenient tool that addresses the fact that our students, faculty and staff frequently need access to Kettering’s computing resources when they aren’t physically on campus.”
KUcloud is housed on servers in the IT department. Users are able to login with their Kettering University Windows Domain username and password and immediately have access to a set of tools they would have if they were logged into their desktop on campus in a user-friendly environment that looks like a standard Windows computer.
Students have access to programs like Maple, Matlab, Mintab, Aspen, Labview, Comsol, MS Viso, MS Project, MS Visual Studio and other tools, as well as their S:\ and U:\ drives.
Faculty, depending on the department, have access to the same software as students, and faculty and staff now have the ability to access tools like Banner offsite, as well as their N:\, O:\, P:\ or T:\ drives.
“We’re very excited to be able to offer this powerful virtual tool to the Kettering Community,” Sprague said. “We’re also very receptive to feedback or suggestions for how we can continue to improve KUcloud and ensure that it is as useful as possible to all of our stakeholders.”
