Kettering University is launching Kettering Service Corps, a program that will embed students in local agencies to assist or lead projects that advance the mission of the philanthropic group and positively contribute to the greater Flint community.

“Our students have always served as positive vehicles for improvement and change in the Flint community,” said Jack Stock, Director of External Relations at Kettering University. “This program is an opportunity for Kettering students to become even more involved in a meaningful and productive way.”

Fifteen Kettering students will be selected to serve 15 hours from May 16 to July 1 in 15 different community organizations. The program is designed for Federal Work-Study eligible students who will be paid by Kettering at no cost to the local organization. Students will be paired with local agencies based on their skills and interests.

“We hope that local non-profit organizations can utilize the unique technical and leadership skills of our students on any initiative of our their choosing,” Stock said. “The purpose of the program is for Kettering students to apply their skills to build a better Flint.”

This program builds on Kettering’s community vitality efforts in Flint. Below are additional highlights of Kettering’s work in the community:

• Kettering’s Service Saturdays program has contributed more than 2,000 volunteer hours from students, faculty and staff to service projects in the city of Flint.

• Helped bring in more than $1 million in neighborhood stabilization grants to the city of Flint since 2014.

• Restored historic Atwood Stadium which marked the return of high school athletics to the stadium in August 2015.

• Catalyzed economic development in the city, including opening an Einstein Bros. Bagels on Chevrolet Avenue in 2013 and nearing completion on a project that will bring a Jimmy John’s on University Avenue in 2016.

• Installing a state-of-the-art proving ground in its portion of the old “Chevy in the Hole” site on the corner of Chevrolet Avenue and Bluff Street by the end of 2016.
