Dr. Bassem Ramadan has been named Department Head of the Kettering University Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Ramadan joined Kettering University in 1998 and has been the Associate Department Head of Mechanical Engineering since 2014.

“I believe that Dr. Ramadan’s innate abilities and the administrative experience that he’s gained over the last couple of years makes him an ideal fit as the new Mechanical Engineering Department Head,” said Dr. Craig Hoff, Founding Dean of the Kettering University College of Engineering. “Throughout his exemplary career at Kettering, Dr. Ramadan has proven to be an effective teacher, an exemplary researcher and a valued leader within the University. He will be a tremendous asset to the University’s leadership team.”

Ramadan has made significant contributions in the application of computational fluid dynamics to internal combustion engines and in modeling and understanding fluid flow in exhaust after-treatment systems to reduce emissions.  He has won numerous funded research proposals that supported more than 45 MS theses. Major funding sources for his research include the Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, NASA, General Dynamics, Eaton, Magna, General Motors and Delphi.

Kettering’s Mechanical Engineering program is consistently ranked among the top programs in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report. In the most recent rankings, the program was ranked seventh in the country.

“I am really excited about becoming the Mechanical Engineering Department Head and I am eager to bring my skills to the job,” Ramadan said. “I look forward to collaborating with faculty, staff and students and working together toward the continued growth and development of our great M.E. program.”

During his career at Kettering, Ramadan has developed five new graduate courses and three specialized advanced courses for industry, taught 11 different courses in the M.E. curriculum, and has co-authored a popular textbook on fluid mechanics. He is a Fellow of ASME, and is past recipient of the University’s Outstanding Teaching, Distinguished Researcher, Outstanding Applied Researcher, and Outstanding New Researcher awards. He is a member of ASME, SAE, ASEE and ACS.

Ramadan received his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University. Prior to joining Kettering University, he was an Adjunct Professor at Michigan State University where he taught courses in Mechanical Engineering and conducted engine research at the Engine Research Laboratory.
