“MACAC provides a great platform to get to know your peers and build a ‘professional family’ with colleagues.”
LaShaunta Hairston, Kettering University associate director of admissions, began serving a three-year term as the president of the Michigan Association of College Admissions Counselors (MACAC) in March of 2016.
Hairston, a Flint native, started at Kettering in January of 2015. She’s previously worked in admissions for Wayne State University, the University of Michigan-Dearborn and Marietta College. She has been involved in MACAC since 2007.
“I’m looking forward to serving MACAC and learning from colleagues in admissions from Michigan and across the country,” Hairston said. “MACAC provides a great platform to get to know your peers and build a ‘professional family’ with colleagues at other institutions.”
Hairston earned her Bachelor of Business Administration in Computer Information Systems and a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership, focused in student affairs, from Eastern Michigan University. She’s currently completing requirements for her Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Wayne State University.
“LaShaunta’s knowledge of college admissions and higher education administration will serve her tremendously well in her role as MACAC president,” said Tracie Jones, Kettering University Director of Admissions. “She is an amazing asset to Kettering University, and I’m excited for her opportunity to lead and share her vision for admissions with colleagues in MACAC over the next three years.”
Hairston is the third Kettering University admissions team member to lead MACAC since 2002. Jones served as president in 2010 and former staff member Barbara Sosin, who now works for Girl Scouts of America, served in 2002. Since joining MACAC, Hairston has served as a member of the Government Relations committee, the Annual Conference Planning committee and the Budget and Finance committee. She has also served in several leadership positions including chair of the both the Professional Development committee and the Inclusion, Access and Success committee. Most recently, she was treasurer.
She is passionate about spending time with her family, particularly her 5-year-old daughter. She also enjoys snowboarding, personal development activities and is an avid golfer who has played the game for more than 15 years.
At Kettering, Hairston notes that Kettering’s small size and focus on personal attention allows her to spend time getting to know students she works with as they make their college choices.
“I enjoy working with students and families and, ultimately, helping them pursue their career goals and dreams through a Kettering education,” Hairston said.
