“As parents, we saw our son go from a child to a young man quickly. He learned to be self-sufficient, confident and competent while attending Kettering University.”
As parents we chose to send our son to Kettering University for several reasons. Aside from the fact that Kettering is one of the top universities in the nation (for Science and Engineering), the smaller student population and class sizes helped make our family's decision easier.
Unbeknownst to many, our son, Marquis was an introvert - very shy in unfamiliar surroundings and tending to keep to himself. The decision to attend Kettering University was in part driven by the smaller student to staff ratios compared to larger universities. This would allow for an atmosphere where students and professors could get to know each other on a personal level.
Kettering offers a unique opportunity for the students to participate in paid co-op positions while completing their degree. In fact, the co-ops are a part of their educational program regardless of area of study. Students have an opportunity to work in the area of their chosen profession with some of the top corporations in the nation. Most, if not all, offer premium wages, benefits, and in many cases paid housing stipends to help with relocation costs during the co-op term. Students’ earnings may be used to help offset tuition or whatever purpose they determine.
Students may have the opportunity to work in the continental United States, as well as overseas. Kettering's co-op staff works closely with students to ensure their placements are a good fit. If not, they can/will be offered assistance in obtaining alternate placement, until they find a "good fit." Additionally, Kettering offers lifetime employment assistance to their graduates.
The student who attends Kettering University will find it challenging. However, Kettering staff are committed to helping each student succeed, providing the student puts in the necessary effort. That means the student must talk to professors if/when they are having difficulty. The earlier the better, so a success plan can be formulated. Numerous study groups are available for the person who's willing to seek them out.
As parents, we saw our son go from a child to a young man quickly. He learned to be self-sufficient, confident and competent while attending Kettering University. The opportunities for personal growth are endless. His money management, time management, interpersonal communication skills and study skills all improved dramatically.
As a mother I will tell you that I got to observe my child blossom into an outgoing, self-confident, yet humble, sensitive, kind, compassionate, community conscientious young man. He has learned to interact with new people, by the hundreds (and thousands)! He's established life-long bonds of brotherhood, working relationships and friendships that will last forever. He is happy, directed and well on his way.
Does Kettering get all the credit for his success? No. But they certainly helped Marquis get to the place he is now in his educational and personal development. To say that his father and I are proud of him, is an understatement! We are blessed and happy that Kettering University is the place where his growth and development was stimulated, encouraged and nurtured.
