Editorial: Kettering University students participate in Harvard conference

I love to see Kettering University help to play this vital role in this prestigious conference.”

The Kettering University Model United Nations team recently completed another successful trip to Boston, Massachusetts, for Harvard's National Model United Nations conference in January 2017.

This marked the team's sixth year competing at the conference.

The prestigious conference is known worldwide for its excellence in programming and bringing together the brightest young political minds from all over the world to debate key issues. Many of the 3,000 delegates who participate come from top-ranking universities from 70 different countries. This includes Kettering University students from a number of different areas of study.

"In our keynote speech at the conference, the importance of different perspectives and understandings in political dialogue was highlighted with great importance,” said Mitchell Shepherd, President of the Kettering University Model United Nations (KUMUN) team. “In today's political spectrum, we've come to understand that in order to develop systems of merit, we must ensure that all walks of life are politically and socially engaged with their communities. I love to see Kettering University help to play this vital role in this prestigious conference.”

The KUMUN team averages 30 members at each of their weekly meetings. The team has set a goal to average of 50 club members by 2019.

“We as engineers, computer scientists and business leaders provide key insights about how the world works,” Shepherd said. “I believe it is critical to inspire our students to stay politically active and be exposed to a different kind of culture.”
