Homecoming Weekend at Kettering University May 17-19 establishes a new tradition, but it also renews a part of the University’s culture with a car show and tailgate from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Car shows have long been a part of the Kettering/GMI heritage, with the first car show taking place in 1964. In fact, one of the cars in that original show will be back this year. A 1941 Buick owned by Dave Langdon ‘65 will again be on display. Langdon’s Buick won first place in the ‘stock sedan’ category at the original car show.

“At the time, the car was my daily driver, back and forth to school and work at my co-op at AC Spark Plug,” Langdon said. “That’s the car I had when my wife and I dated during my senior year. I still have the car and it will be in this year’s show.”

This year’s car show, featuring vehicles from alumni, students, faculty and staff, will have eight different categories eligible for people’s choice awards: Antique (1960 and older), Classic (1961-1980), Modern (1981-2013), Motorcycle, Alternative Fuel Vehicle, Coolest Technology, People’s Favorite and a special competition for fraternity and sorority vehicles.

All participants who pre-register receive dash plaques. Advanced registration is $10 for alumni, faculty and staff or $5 for students. Registration is $15 the day of the event.
