Every year since 2010, a small group of Phi Delta Theta fraternity members at Kettering University have been running a 62-mile relay race that starts at the General Motors Headquarters in Detroit and ends at the Kettering University campus.

They call it the “GM to GMI” race, and this year they are running to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Over the past semester, seven Phi Delta Theta fraternity members and six members from Lamda Chi Alpha have been training for the relay race that takes place on May 30, 2015. Each relay team member will run approximately 9-10.5 miles during their leg of the race. The first leg starts on Woodward Avenue and continues west on Dixie Highway, avoiding interstates, until the course finally ends at the Kettering University Campus Center at the intersection of University Avenue and Chevrolet. 

“One of the unexpected challenges during the race is to avoid cramping up,” says Kevin Loughlin, Phi Delta Theta member and runner. “Only one person is running at a time so it is important for teammates to walk around and get out of the car to stay loose.”

This year will mark the fifth iteration of the race.

“The relay started when a group of members at our Phi Delta Theta chapter decided it would be fun to run from the General Motors Headquarters to Kettering (GM to GMI)," Loughlin said. "It was later turned into a philanthropy event. Last year we raised $1,000 for ALS, and $400 in 2013, but this year we will be supporting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.”
