FIRST Robotics at Kettering University
Empowering Tomorrow’s Trailblazers to Achieve the Extraordinary.
Kettering University equips the next generation of robotics innovators with the skills and confidence to turn bold ideas into reality. Our support of 10 For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics teams offers high school students unrivaled opportunities to design, build, and compete with industrial-size robots in local and national competitions — and win.
Team members have access to our advanced robotics labs and mentorship from industry experts and experienced Kettering students, where they gain skills in robotics, programming, mechanical design, and teamwork that prepare them for success in tournaments, college, and future careers.
Our Commitment to FIRST Robotics
- Providing 25+ years of coaching experience from Kettering students and faculty
- Guiding students as they learn to use mills, lathes, TIG welding, and other machine shop equipment
- Training students in using computer-aided design (CAD), Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines, and 3D printers
- Hosting annual district competitions since 2008
- Awarding over $5.5 million in robotics scholarships since 1999
Robotics Community Center
Robotics Community Center
FIRST Robotics teams transform concepts into reality in our cutting-edge Robotics Community Center. They use advanced equipment to build and test robots on the regulation-size practice field.
Competitions and Camps
Experience the thrill of robotics through hands-on challenges that push your limits and prepare you for real-world STEM careers.
FIRST Robotics Competitions
In this annual competition, high school teams have six weeks to design and build industrial-size robots to complete specific tasks. The robots then compete in regional, state, and national events.
Robot in Three Days (Ri3D) Challenge
Kettering students who are also FIRST alumni complete the year’s FIRST Robotics challenge in just 72 hours in Ri3D Challenge. Their rapid builds inspire high school teams, demonstrating effective troubleshooting techniques and showcasing solutions.
Explore Summer Robotics Camps
Accelerate your STEM learning with our intensive robotics camps for high school students. Master prototyping, testing, coding, and more as you get ready to build robots of the future.
FIRST Robotics Scholarships and Sponsorships
Kettering ensures robotics education remains accessible and rewarding for students who have a competitive drive.
Scholarship Opportunities
Incoming first-year or transfer Kettering students can earn a renewable $5,000 annual scholarship
Sponsorships
The Kettering/GMI Alumni Association (KGMIAA) provides local FIRST Robotics teams with funding for new equipment, competition travel costs, and more.
