“We've attended the conference for several years but this year was the first time we've won an award at the conference.”
A 16-member delegation made up of students from the Kettering University Model United Nations Club attended the National Model United Nations Competition at Harvard University from February 12-15 and for the first time in its history, came home with a prize.
"It's considered the 'Super Bowl' of Model U.N. conferences," Michael Graham said. "We've attended the conference for several years but this year was the first time we've won an award at the conference."
Kettering's team represented Uzbekistan and The Gambia on committees but was recognized for their efforts representing the United States on a commission on the use of science and technology for the purposes of development. Kettering students worked along side schools such as Yale University and University of Chicago on this committee to address international issues such as cyber security and illicit arms trade and attempted to define the true meaning of "terrorism." For their efforts, the Kettering team was recognized for representing the United State on the commission.
The team hopes to utilize their collective experiences from the international competition, which featured 4,000 students from 58 countries, to help construct their own competition on campus in the near future.
"The experience and contacts we gained at this national competition will help us as we plan our own Model U.N. Competition at Kettering this spring," Graham said.
The team is stranded in Boston due to inclement weather as of Monday, February 16 but they plan on using the extra time on east coast to continue to explore the campuses of Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
