Biochemistry Laboratories

The C.S. Mott Engineering and Science Center, completed in 2004, houses state-of-the-art laboratories where students have the opportunity to delve deeper into chemistry and biochemistry through hands-on laboratory experiments and research projects. Currently, there are four laboratories: the Bell Laboratories I and II, an Environmental Organic Chemistry Laboratory and a Biophysical Chemistry Laboratory. Adjoining these laboratories are two rooms filled with research quality instrumentation, such as:

UV/Vis Spectrometers (UV/Vis)
Infrared Spectrometers (FT-IR)
Gas Chromatographs (GC)

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer (NMR)

Bell Laboratories I and II The Bell Laboratories I and II are designed for typical chemistry courses such as general chemistry, industrial organic chemistry and analytical chemistry. Here students learn chemical concepts through experiments. Students also learn the techniques required to undertake more advanced courses and an independent research project.

Environmental Organic Laboratory The Environmental Organic Laboratory is designed specifically to meet the needs of organic chemists. Advanced organic classes are held here and this laboratory is used by the majority of the faculty to carry out their research projects.

Biophysical Chemistry Laboratory The Biophysical Chemistry Laboratory is designed to meet the requirements of the physical chemists and biochemists. This teaching laboratory is used by the faculty and students to carry out independent research projects too.

NMR Spectrometer A 60 MHz Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer is shown to the left. Its primary function is unraveling the skeletal structures of organic compounds and organometallic complexes.
