Acoustics is the science of sound. A huge number of scientific problems and disciplines fit into this definition, including noise and vibration control, electroacoustics (audio, loudspeaker and microphone design), medical ultrasonics (using sound to kill cancer cells without surgery) and more.
At Kettering, even if you're not a physics major, you can still pursue a minor in Acoustics. For the minor, you’ll complete 16 credits—and get the chance to create your own vibrations with a research project. Some examples include
- mapping the vector sound intensity field around a tuning fork,
- acoustical study of the Djembe (African Hand Drum), or
- modeling a small room for acoustical measurements.
